MARK DUNLOP | | vocals, whistles, bodhrán, flute
Born in Co. Antrim, Mark has been with Malinky since its formation, and has emerged as a wonderfully sensitive and eloquent interpreter of traditional Irish songs, with a particular affinity for his native Ulster heritage. In addition to his soulful yet dynamic flute and whistle playing, Mark’s subtle, melodic approach to rhythmic accompaniment has earned him a growing reputation as one of the leading bodhrán players on today’s Scottish scene. He is also a fine composer of original tunes, which feature widely in the band’s repertoire.
Mark’s multi-faceted talents were recently showcased on his debut solo album Islands on the Moon (Greentrax), released in autumn 2008 and described as “absorbing. . . full of character” in a four-star review from Scotland on Sunday.
Mark has featured in the live concerts that ensued from Dr Fred Freeman’s landmark recording series, The Complete Songs of Robert Burns, and was a featured guest on the 2003 album Fishing Music, by US multi-instrumentalist Ben Winship, playing whistle and bodhrán alongside bluegrass legend Tim O'Brien.
Mark has also worked extensively as a bodhrán and whistle tutor, passing on his skills via the Glasgow Fiddle Workshop, Edinburgh’s Scots Music Group, the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, and at the Celtic College in Goderich, Ontario, Canada.
